2010/04/15 Technology: Apple's iPad

No, not that kind of Pad you plonker…Apple’s new “little” device that will supposedly “revolutionize the way we consume media”…I know…sounds extremely dramatic if you ask me. Well, after the amount of online reading I have done on Apple’s Revolutionary device, I think I could possibly vomit iPads…….so, who wants one?

I have literally been reading about the device for the last couple of months (2-3) and watched the craze and demand grow every single week. It literally felt as though Star Wars was going into post-production and the buzz humming around “Nerdville” was immense. So immense that there were a whole host of “fake” and “gay” “misleading” posts and leaks (as we like to call them in the tech-savvy industry) about what Apple’s new iPad was going to look like, do and change the way we will live FOREVER…!

Well, it’s here…she’s a beauty isn’t she? It kind of looks like a really big iPhone, doesn’t it? Still want it…? Yes, I know…me too…but why? That is what I am struggling to pin-point…I don’t know why I want it, I just do…I need it…I crave it…but sadly will probably never own one until possibly grabbing a second hand one from somewhere…regardless of why I need it or not…the fact of the matter that still remains is that even though I have not experienced it, played with it and let alone touched it…I still want it.

Well done Mr.Jobs - (Brilliant!)
Well done Mr.Jobs - (Brilliant!)

Firstly, I think that it has got something to do with the fact Apple, as a company make and create “family orientated” products – imagine a set of Tupper-ware…fantastic, handy little things that are brilliant one there own, but you can’t just have one…you have to (HAVE TO) have the whole set, it would be an insult to just buy one piece out of a Tupper-ware set…it’s just not…you know, Apple!

So there it is, in terms of Apple as a company, it’s their fault for making such wonderful products because it baits us into a “must have” mind set for everything they release…bastards…”oooh look, the new iPhone OS 4……..”

It's all gone pear...
It's all gone pear...

Secondly, if you are already a subscriber to Apple’s “drugs” of choice, then you probably already have a MacBook or a MacBook Pro or an iPhone…either of which will give you some idea of the processing capabilities of this little machine. Closet comparison to the iPad is the iPhone, with it’s ability to use short applications, much like the iPhone’s Applications interface (short programs are not full computer programs such as the ones found on your MacBook) – so yes, the iPad is basically an over-grown iPhone…or is it?

Let us not forget about it's brilliantly thought out name...
Let us not forget about it's brilliantly thought out name...

There are a lot of short falls with regards to its comparison to the iPhone! For instance, the 3GS, Apples latest iPhone has full internet connectivity (without Flash capabilities, as always) where as the iPad uses Wifi…really…Wifi? That’s so 2005, I mean, with the limited and expensive Wifi connectivity that we already have here in South Africa…who really has the time or the money to be connecting via Wifi…?! Supposedly there is a more expensive (approx. R2000 more expensive) version of the iPad that is being released with 3G, but one would need “a MicroSim which isn’t available in SA”…I know right?

Pointless and dead-ended again…! You can connect via your iPhone but what would be the point of that when one could just simple use their respective iPhone? Seems like this is turning out to be an amazingly brilliant waste of money.

In retrospect, what you do get from the iPad is the ability to see everything you would view on your iPhone on a bigger screen and in a more user-friendly way (portable and smaller) than that via your MacBook.

So, do you still want one?

I'm confused...
I'm confused...

The answer is YES, the machine seems incredibly worth it…even at entry level. I understand that the iPad will be coming out in 32G and 64G versions which will help those choosing to really embrace the product. My one and only reservation about Apple’s iPad is the fact that this recent release is 1st Gen (Generation) and much like all Apple’s products…they seem to get better as time goes on…for instance, take the iPhone for example…it’s taken them 3 versions – hence 3GS – to get the iPhone right and there is even talk of the release of the iPhone OS 4 which will have more “business orientated” standard applications – yes, such as Blackberry as always had -

– so is it wise to hold out for the 2nd Gen of the iPad? Who knows…all I know is that it’s Apple so, unfortunately, or fortunately (we’ll let you decide) it’s a must have…and a must have NOW…

…I just don’t know why…
