2010/03/15 Music and Concert Review: Dave Holland - Saxophonist

Talent comes in all shapes an sizes, including those born abroad.

Dave Holland is just one of those talents. But, do not think for one second that this Brit does not have any ties to this wonderful country. Yes, you might see him sporting an English rugby jersey at your local, but this ex-pat has "rooted" himself firmly in South African soil...!

Name: Dave Holland
Age: 28
Nationality: British (South African nurtured...)

He was born in Kent, United Kingdom and began playing saxophone from the age of 13. He joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra at the age of 15 before going on to study Jazz at the prestigious Birmingham Conservatoire.

Whilst in the UK, he became established as a freelance session musician with studio recordings for Acid Jazz amongst other well known labels. Working closely with UB40 at their studios in the West Midlands and American jazz giant: Randy Brecker before deciding the UK climate was simply unbearable.

Dave moved to the USA to play for 6 months and eventually ended up in South Africa where he met his wife (former Afro-Z vocalist; Naseera Timm-Holland).

Since living in JoBurg, he's worked tirelessly to become established, and has been very fortunate to be recognised by the local musical community.

The most notable performances/achievements in South Africa include:

Dave Holland in the flesh...

The O'Jays Tour 2009

Tim Moloi band from 2009 including performances for ETV (see his website for diary)

Studio sessions for the Confederations Cup anthem in 2009

Performing with the Soweto Gospel Choir in 2008

Performing with jazz legends; The African Jazz Pioneers in 2008

The future:

Dave Holland and Mr. Edwards
Dave Holland and Mr. Edwards

Currently in pre-production for an electronic/live duo called Fat Tuesday. They write original House and Lounge/Chillout music as well as remix other well known records. It's an exiting group featuring a great deal of live manipulation of electronic sounds and vice-versa, an attempt to reduce the gap between electronic music and the live performance. The possibilities are endless and the music is amazing.

Pre-production samples can be found by visiting www.zoopy.com/fattuesday. They can also be found on Twitter for information about future gigs. The plan is to have an album out before the end of 2010.

**********Featured Tour**********

A busy schedule with Jason Hartman begins with the Kelly Clarkson Tour. They'll be traveling between Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town over the coming week to perform to capacity crowds at each of the three venues.

**********Local Gigs**********

Regular gigs with some of the country's finest DJ's. You'll find him in any number of places throughout the week with regular Electronica/House performances with Mr.Edwards among others.

Goals

To continue to spend as much time in the studio as possible.

To continue to teach my saxophone pupils, at the very least, I feel that international knowledge exchange is important in the development of the industry in this country.

Additional Info:

Music for me is a form of expression beyond anything else. It's an environment where race, age, religion and everything in between is forgotten. I think that the key to music is being able to listen, process and compliment. A group of musicians can only make true music when they listen to what each other are doing, to understand your role within that group of people and do what you can to add to it without being self-indulgent.

A truely talented performer...

South Africa for me is a beautiful country with wonderful people. There is an abundance of natural talent. I feel sometimes that the musicians are under represented, and it is difficult for them to find the support they need to be afforded the time and funding to create beautiful music. However, the music scene is developing fast in this country and with support, it will continue to grow and emerge as a strong contender with the overseas heavyweights. I'm very proud and indeed grateful to be involved in this industry at this time.

I spend what little free time I have with my family (wife Naseera, and two boys; Rayhaan 8 and Niaz; 18 months). I believe that the support and inspiration from my family has been the most important factor in allowing me to pursue and make a success of music.

Recently Dave has performed with his Fat Tuesday counterpart Mr.Edwards for ZAGlamour's "Fire and Ice" Event which happened on the 5th of March.

The reception of the duo was unbelievably well received and the mix of live performance and ice jazz electronic was the perfect combination for the event itself. Dave has, along with this venture with Mr.Edwards have our full support here at ZAGlamour and their involvement in the "Fire and Ice" event will not be their last performance with ZAGlamour by any means.

Regards

David of ZAGlamour
