2010/08/16 Music and Concert Review: A Thrilling Tribute

Michael Jackson August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009

The Man, The performer, the undisputed King of Pop!

Taken too soon but his legacy will live on thanks to the likes of industry great, Adrian Grant and the talented cast of Thriller Live.

I was fortunate enough to see this breathtaking show and I can assure you that it is just that - breathtaking.

I bounced / clapped / sang and cheered in my seat all while scrutinizing every aspect of the show, as a dancer/performer I am unfortunately more critical and was apprehensive as to what to expect, how Michael Jackson would be portrayed and mimicked? Would the show do him justice? But mostly would there be an element of surprise? I was pleasantly surprised. The main performers all brought their own versions of Michael to life - never once attempting to mimic him. Let's be honest the man was a genius and no one could better him and thankfully this was acknowledged.

Thriller Live boasts an all star studded cast with the incredible Zoe Birkett, winner of the ITV's Pop Idols 2002 as the female Michael Jackson voice. Thriller Live showcases 2 hours of non-stop hits that span across four decades of his life. Starting with The Jackson Five where a very talented Jordan D. Bratton (14 years) wowed and left me speechless. Eight dancers performed Michaels original choreographies with fresh and funky street dancing thrown into the mix. The performers get you on your feet and participating - yes, to allow for the fabulous costume changes, but a fun experience for all ages. The set designs were simple yet affective but most impressive was the lighting design. The use of multiple LED screens was something to behold. Rows of interactive LED screens all with the most amazing dancing images dazzled and at times I had no idea if the images were of real live performers being filmed back stage or not. This honestly could have been a stand alone show, but kudos needs to be given to Nigel Catmur!

In his life time Michael sold an unparalleled 750 million records with the "Thriller" album still the world's best-selling recording of all time! Listen to tracks such as 'Thriller', 'Billie Jean' and 'Earth Song' - pure musical genius. Michael loved to create and sadly I think there was still so much more to come. The show has left me wide awake and ready to party with just enough heart sore to feel very privileged to have lived in the time of Michael Jackson, the world's greatest showman!
