2010/05/01 Lifestyle: The Geek - All sorts make the World

To geek, or not to geek? That is the question. What is it that makes this part of the social clique spectrum so interesting? Is their knowledge? Is it their impeccable dress sense? Or, is it, their girlfriends?

Within this 2nd Bi-monthly of April, we will discuss the very (or not so) popular: GEEK.

Defining Geek:

Geek...just deal with it man.
Geek...just deal with it man.

A 'geek' is someone with an interest or lifestyle having to do with very niche activities. It is not uncommon for a geek to be capable of reciting large amounts of knowledge that are unintuitive, intriguing and at times, just plain disturbing. Geeks can vary in their interests, from fun and sometimes even frivolous things, to heavily technological interests. Geeks often have gained vast amounts of knowledge and are capable of reciting them in a very long-winded manner. The knowledge could be anywhere from the mundane to 'living encyclopedia' status.

Geeks are well aware of their 'geekiness'. Many geeks are even proud of being a geek, hence the launching of entities such as ThinkGeek.com, Hip2Be2 and Nag Magazine to name but a few. Some famous geeks include: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and more locally Mark Shuttleworth.

So now to answer the question that EVERYBODY is asking, why do geeks get the girls? Well, here are a few reasons: Geeks are the best at what they do. Geeks are loyal and most importantly, geeks are proud of who they are and they know how to rock it, in other words, they are confident. Girls love guys with confidence. Basically geeks get the girls because they offer a sense of stability. You won’t find the geek popping out with mates after work to go booze up at the local pub and have the leopard print dress lady smear her lipstick all over him, no, a geek goes home. To spend time on his activities of interest. This most likely, if he has one, would be his girlfriend.

Being a geek can be extremely difficult or it can be super easy. It all depends on how much (or how little) effort you give. Here are some easy steps on going geek:

ROTFLMAO...did you get that?
ROTFLMAO...did you get that?

1. Getting to know Geekdom >>>
Subscribe to geek mags like Nag, PC Format and Popular Mechanics. Read them from cover to cover and in each issue pick out three words you've never heard of before. Memorize these and try to use them often.

2. Language >>>
Geeks have their own language, and no, it’s not difficult to learn. It’s not a completely different dialect it’s simply a matter of being able to discuss certain topics in EXTREME detail. Geeks can make anything seem higher grade and intensely intellectual. Heck, they can make grape seem like a revolutionary in the history of food. It’s just a matter of research and studying.

3. The power of the internet >>>
Go to Wikipedia / Google once a week (or daily if you prefer) and type in your chosen topic. Research this chosen topic in severe depth as this will be used as a topic for conversation when you invite fellow geeks over, OR more importantly, when you need to impress that fine young lady with your brain power. For example you could research “grapes” and learn that Grapes' phytochemicals such as resveratrol (a polyphenol antioxidant), have been positively linked to inhibiting any cancer, heart disease, degenerative nerve disease, viral infections and mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease. Remember to apply this research together with Step number 2.

4. Showing off >>>
Every geek should at least own 3 weird, wacky but super rad gadgets. Not just you’re average gaming consoles with guitar heroes, mp3 players and more recently the iPad. But gadgets like a Doodle Tracker, Bucky Balls or an Alarm Clock Pillow. If you don’t know what these are, refer to point number 3.

5. Clothing >>>
Never wear clothes that are in style. Try wearing shirts that have to do with inside jokes from cult classic movies or books, or try something sci-fi or Computer Related. As for pants, stovepipe and tapered jeans are a must. Colour co-ordination is a big no. You are an individual and you need to express it!

6. Shoes >>>
Sneakers, sneakers and sneakers. Especially those Nike sneakers that light up at the heel whenever you take a step. Smart shoes are only applicable if you need to attend a wedding, a funeral or a corporate meeting. Which in essence, are sort of all the same?

7. Literature >>>
Your book case should contain anything from an encyclopaedia, dictionary and a computer programming manual to more classic literature such as Terry Pratchett, Isaac Asimov, Robert Jordan as well as Ian M. Banks. These rectangular objects are not to be used as dust collectors or doorstoppers, but they are there to be read, not skimmed and scanned… read. Properly. And then obviously, discussed.

8. Become a fan boy >>>
This means watching the original Star Wars and Star Trek movies. Then, you choose your side, carefully. Once you’ve chosen your side, you study every single detail about it, from release dates to who the make up artists were. And you will use this information as your ammunition whenever you get caught in a Trekkie / Jedi debate-war. Go on, and make Chewbacca or Dr. Spock proud! There are no fence sitters in geekdom, defend your side as if your life depends on it!

9. Make friends with other geeks >>>
The best way to be one is to be friends with one. Together you two can learn and teach each other more about computers and physics, and you can have fun doing geeky things. Better yet, make friends with geeks that are on the same Fanboy side as you. This way you will always have a reason to hang out.

10. Avoid trendy hairstyles >>>
Avoiding a haircut in general is a good way to go, but if you must have one, then a bowl-cut is a good choice, preferably your mom cutting it with an old bowl. Styling is also a no-go; flaunt that natural frizz and curl! Hair products are for those metro boys right? Again, though, if you must, a side or middle parting works very well for that geek look you’ve always wanted.

Geekdom might seem intimidating, it might seem like loser-ville, but fear not young man, Geek is the new black. What makes a geek cool is not just his knowledge, but his passion for it.

No go out and make your physics teachers proud!

Good luck boys, and until next time.
