"Green as Better"

Greening: When will people see “Green” as “Better”? There is an old saying that goes like this, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" - this really pisses me off... Who said anything was “broke” and who in... 2009/10/01

2010/05/15 Greening: What's New in Eco-Tech

What’s new in the Eco-preneurial Industry?

There has been a lot of speculation in terms of what the "next big thing" will be in tech and marketing for the "Go Green" industry. Everything from new and innovative inventions such as spray-on solar powered panels to biodegradable cell phones and Projects to reclaim the Deserts of the world.

There is so much out there and when you know all the right places to look, one might feel over-whelmed trying to focus on it all at the same time. This post is here to establish my own "bench-marks" so-to-speak when it comes to searching for "Green Know How", both locally and internationally.

Firstly, "Green Know How" can be categorized as a general term and there are many categories that fall under this generic topic such as, “Green Tech”, “Day to Day Greening Initiatives”, “New and Innovation Products”, “Greening Reviews” and “Green Blogs” etc. Here are some of the websites I try and use on a daily basis to keep in touch with the ever-changing world of “Green Know How”:

Eco_preneur – www.ecopreneur.co.za

This local gem is one of a kind with a selection of brilliant posts by Charles Bryant. The website is easy to navigate, informative, filled with incredible links and respective eco-savvy contributors.

Inhabitat – www.inhabitat.com

An incredible international website devoted to all things green. From tech to Human feats, Inhabitat is one of the biggest and best “web portals” to find the latest and greatest trends in the “Eco Industry”. It is simply brilliant and I am happy to say that many of my resources are pulled directly from their database. (Tip: Take a look at the archived posts and articles, their previous postings address some of the more global issues centered around the state of the environment instead of the “mini/techie/nice-to-haves” of the now.)

Even though this website has got its fair share of members, it lacks a certain substance to it. There really are no serious discussions or networking possibilities unless you make a concerted effort to track someone down, and even then, people on the network seem to withhold valuable contact information, which really pisses me off because if this little network is supposedly there to connect “like minded” people, why are the contact details not transparent? Having been a member of the website for 10 months or so, I have made one valuable connection who I’ve subsequently not heard from in ages.

Angry African on the Loose - www.angryafrican.net

This website is one of my favourite ex-pat South African blogging and resource websites. This man is an inspiration to me on a daily basis. Even though I have only just recently stumbled upon this incredible piece of literacy, I feel connected to this man and the issues he speaks about. He covers all issues, politics, racism and everything to do with South Africa focusing his attention on the impact to the South African environment. Just an incredible read, it’s not only inspiring but also informative at the same time, I’m proud to be following “Angry African on the loose”!

Going Green Directory – www.goinggreen.co.za

Going Green Baby...Yeah...
Going Green Baby...Yeah...

The Going Green Directory is a local South African website dedicated to the Green Industry in South Africa. The website covers all aspects of the industry from all over the country from local recycling depots to organic and homeopathic supplement retailers. Their company “Dream” reads as follows: South Africa is known throughout the world for the friendliness of its people and the unsurpassed beauty of its environment. Living in this wonderful country, it has often occurred to us that there is a high level of public interest in environmental issues, but also that there is a lack of accessible information to the public - showing them what they can practically do on a personal level.

It seems that the majority of the population realises the worth of the environment and wants to conserve it, but doesn't know how to go about it. Our dream is to meet this need by establishing and running the Going Green Eco-Centre and Website.

Would to great to compare and discuss any of your favourites you may have that I haven’t mentioned. Please remember that these are not all of my preferred websites and by no means rate these any higher than the others I might be slammed for not mentioning, these are just some of the resources I use on a daily basis.
