"Continuing to Complain" |
This post has zero notoriety by any means, it's simply a set of personal complaints I have about almost everything that affects my life as an environmentally conscious South African - yes, I have complaints, deal with it, after reading this, maybe you might agree or disagree, either way, if you relate to even one topic I've brought up, it's something we have in common. |

FAIL-FAIL-FAIL-FAIL!!!!
Firstly, why was the “Clean City Summit” held at the Wanderers last month not broadcast or give a larger public awareness release, it seemed to me like “the powers that be” were the only people given the opportunity to attend and support this initiative. The inner city environment is one of my biggest concerns, especially when it involves pure inner city areas such as Braamfontien and other areas such as Doornfontien and Berea. Once upon a time, these areas were the standard for the Johannesburg City affluent and hosted a vibrant and a culturally driven nightlife.
Unfortunately, these areas have fallen into disrepair, have become crime ridden as well as become the “dustbins” of inner City Johannesburg. Peoples disregard for the environment in the City of Johannesburg is disturbing to say the least. I am by no way saying that everyone who lives in the inner city of Johannesburg is to blame but the select few who have no regard for the general public’s living conditions and personal space should be “hung, drawn and quartered” in my opinion.
Basic littering has become an enormous problem in areas that you wouldn’t normally expect, areas such as “your affluent Bryanston, Sandton, Craighall and others” which shall not be mentioned, as I’m sure you’ve got the idea. These areas filled with stunningly high walls, million Rand security systems, boomed off roads and the unforgiving speed bump…what most don’t know is that these areas are also host to ridiculous amounts of petty littering, illegal dumping and a disregard for waste collection hours.

If you take the time to drive around these “Northern Suburbs”, I guarantee you will be surprised at the amount of petty litter you will find placed “strategically” out of the way from the locals view in their particular areas. This lack of respect and concern of the environment plays the perfect note to sound an opinion that “if it doesn’t affect us, then it isn’t our problem” or “if it isn’t on our lawn or pavement, we don’t care”. It’s f—cking disgusting and the white collar “suits” and mini-van drivers should maybe start to get their hands dirty instead of simply paying for a service and expecting someone else to do it for them.
The solution starts “at home”, if an initiative is not taken upon one’s self, all other accountability immediately falls away and this unfortunately is the attitude portrayed by the residents of these particular areas…I fear for my unborn children.
