2010/04/01 Fashion: Winter Fashion Trends

If you haven’t noticed, the seasons have changed and we are officially into Autumn and will no doubt see the fringe of Winter before expected…! If you weren’t in Johannesburg over the December period you wouldn’t have noticed that we, on the Highveld, didn’t have much of a Summer. Apart form a few great days, the weather was particularly average for this time of the year where we – “Highvelder’s” – usually thrive and experience an incredible Summer time!

Well, as the Soccer World Cup comes rolling in…I suggest that we all be on our trendiest and best behaviour and what better way to do that than by “dressing for the occasion”…yes…I said it, “dressing” and all the other connotations that go with it incredible strange words such as “accessorizing” and “matching”! Well ZAGlamour, welcome to the first (and hopefully not the last) piece of fashion and trending advice from the confines of ZAGlamour. Advice is not something that I am particularly good at giving, especially when it comes to fashion…I mean, if I had it my way, flip flops would be a world wide compulsory…maybe enforcing them (the flip flops) to be standard issue “human” attire and uniform…!

Moving on…

After researching as much as one possibly can from an online media source as vast as the internet, here are a couple of supposed trends for the up coming seasons. What I have been implored to enthuse here is that the “overall trends are unisex” but the specific garments are focused towards men’s fashion rather than the female.

The Military Style Jacket

Pretty rocking if I say so myself...
Pretty rocking if I say so myself...

Now, don’t get me wrong here…no one is telling you to go all “Full Metal Jacket” (and by the way, the term, “Full Metal Jacket” refers to the option of live fire whereas trainees or privates to the army we not allowed to carry around live ammunition) on me, nor am I asking you to don your father’s blood soaked Boer war uniform.

The military style jacket is categorized by that of a navy-orientated styling appeal. Usually this can be identified by over-sized collars and thicken material all round as well as enlarged and reinforced buttons or buckles…yes, buckles on a jacket…try to stay with me here. If the jacket itself is “double-breasted”, even better!

Casual military jackets work too...
Casual military jackets work too...

Personally, I’m kind of fond of the whole military jacket “vibe”, the only problem with this item is that this kind of clothing is very seasonal and will probably lay dormant until next Winter, which by then will have another style trending and thus rendering this particular item…useless! Then again, buying the correct jacket will render it timeless…it’ll be your “go-to-guy” and your pillar of strength for all evening occasions, even if it means wearing it from your car to the restaurant door and then it becomes a chair back warmer for the rest of the evening.

Tips for buying the right military jacket:

You may add the "running action" at your own discretion!
You may add the "running action" at your own discretion!

- Keep the colours simple – navy blue, dark green, grey or black will do just fine!

- Find one that fits your frame "snuggly", a loose and larger jacket can only be worn closed otherwise it tends to flap around and you might be confused for Dark Winged Duck…keep it snug, it can be worn both open and closed and thus allowing for more options.

- Avoid jackets that come with additional belts…they’re unnecessary!

- Make sure the jacket has pockets, this item can be used regularly in the correct season and in turn needs to be able to be used for all the storage that your jeans once provided…

The Hat to end all Hats

It's getting old now...
It's getting old now...

Hands up who is sick and tired of seeing “Gold Fish Hats”…I apologise for the rude and inappropriate colloquialisms and direct reference to one of South Africa’s finest musical bands, but c’mon people…they band wore it first, that doesn’t give you the right to run around in your Ed Hardy T-Shirt and wave your “Gold Fish Hat” at everyone who doesn’t have one…move on, find something else, maybe be as brave as to be unique to your own style…who knows?!

Old school is IN...!
Old school is IN...!

In keeping with the overall feeling of the military trend, this season…I implore you to leave your Ed Hardy caps and summer-peaks at home and try something slightly more sophisticated. Now, when I say sophisticated, I don’t mean go off and buy yourself a top hat…what I’m trying to urge you to do is look to purchase something this different…a hat that not only adds to your overall style but is also practical at the same time.

Going for something woven or even plaid will hold you in good stead, but what is even more appealing that just your ordinary round tipped hats is a style that is slowly but surely making a comeback and should be quite prominent for this Winter’s trends. The re-introduction…nay…the re-emergence of the “paper-boy” styled hat is a head accessory that is a must have this year. What is extremely attractive about this style of hat is that a good quality piece will be able to last you a lifetime. You may think that this style of head-wear is for those that frequent the bathroom 30 times a day and get a kick out of chess at the park. Well, you’re wrong…the introduction of regal fashion such as these head pieces has been slowly but surely happening for years and this type of piece is just one of the more elegant and practical pieces that one should not be without.

Retro styled military caps will also be a great match for the “pseudo military” jacket mentioned above. The more you can match the thematic presence of each piece in the outfit, the more impactful your outfit will become.

Fiiiire!!!

I mean pout...

Okay, it was worth a try...

Tips to buying the ultimate hat for Winter:

I WANT IT...so BAD!!!
I WANT IT...so BAD!!!

- Pick a woven fabric if possible – they tend to wear better with age and won’t fall out of fashion with time
- Stick to neutral colours, beige, brown, black and navy blues are always good
- Make sure it fits, there is nothing worse than being seen wearing a hat that is seemingly stylish but fail to impress because it just doesn’t fit right – if the hat doesn’t fit, it wasn’t meant for you…keep on searching until you fulfill the overall criteria

Scarf down on this…!

So this might seem like over-kill, recommending another Winter orientated fashion accessory as a must have for this up-coming winter spell, but what one must keep in mind is that all of the pre-mentioned items, including this, don’t need to b e worn simultaneously…matching two items together or leaving one or two out will work just as well. This editorial is to create and help you develop different ideas and options about what to wear and what’s new and trending in the fashion industry for the up-coming seasons.

There have been many scarf styles through the ages and one can never be too sure as to which style, colour orientation and patterning fits in with the now. Personally, I am a fan of single coloured, lightweight scarves that can really be used to accessorize any Winter outfit. This year it seems there has been a shift back to the patterning and a new trend that has taken off over the last year, which is the fascination with “Arab Scarves” (now please understand that I am directly quoting the fashion website when the images were sourced). This kind of scarf is steadily growing in popularity and the application seems timeless and limitless. This kind of accessory seems to fulfill a specific fashion trending need more than that of a practicality issue, which is a major concern for some.

This item is classified as a “transitional item” which basically means that no matter the situation, location or fashion need, the “Arab Scarf” is able to fulfill all those fashion requirements.

Ummm...try and avoid this...PLEASE!!!
Ummm...try and avoid this...PLEASE!!!

- If the “Arab” vibe is not your thing, my suggestion is to go for a woolen scarf, two toned or single coloured – this simplicity will allow you to wear it with just about any outfit. (Additional Tip: Buying a vibrant colour may also accentuate the use of the accessory as the scarf acts as a accent piece more than a practical accessory.)

- Learn to tie the scarf correctly…no one wants to look like a fool, constantly tugging and playing with their scarf, so make sure you’ve tied it correctly and that the scarf is placed in a comfortable position that you don’t need to be constantly adjusting it!

- The “Arab Scarves” come in many different styles and colours…make sure you pick something that compliments your chosen outfit for the day or evening.

I hope that this editorial helps to “iron out” some of the fashion orientated kinks and creases in your life for this up-coming chilly season…happy shopping...if that is at all possible!

(Please take note that all of the above opinions and recommendations are strictly the opinions of the editorial staff at ZAGlamour. We take no responsibility for any ridicule or alternatively praise one may receive following our fashion advice and recommendations! Thank you!)
