Joburg nightlife is something that not many people partake in, especially with the sparse selection of nightlife venues. There are three kinds of people that live in Johannesburg, those that party (and can afford to), that that party (and can’t afford to) and those that couldn’t be bothered and land up hanging out at their regular spots on a weekly, or even a bi-or-tri-weekly basis.
Sandton, the proclaim Mecca-of-Money in Johannesburg has and will always have it’s fair share of nightlife attractions including the likes of “Taboo”, “The Baron” in Sandton (where the accountants come to find a personality) - *I kid the number guys* - and the new “Zouk Lounge” which has recently opened up at an old venue which has changed names 3 or 4 times over the last couple of years. Let us not forget FTV Sandton and the other trendy cocktail and after-work liaison locations. What people have not realised as yet is that Johannesburg is slowly but surely moving North and areas such as Fourways, Pineslopes and Sunninghill have become the new epicenter of sociability. Centers such as Broadacres, Cedar Square and now Fourways Mall have become the go-to-places to be seen. |

Clapham Gold
|
The reason I say this is because the associates from the acclaimed VDP Group who have there club-loving fingers in almost every party-orientated establishment in South Africa – as well as London – have just launched their newest addition to the Joburg club scene called “Clapham Gold”. I have been lucky enough to have attended their club in London, appropriately called Clapham Grand and I was not disappointed…! Without going into too much detail about the London version, I had high expectations of “Clapham Gold”, which has been situation in Fourways Mall – conveniently replacing the last failed nightspot, “Platinum”, which took over from “The Catwalk”, which took over from “Hurricanes”, which took over from “Junction Blue”, who took it over originally from “Hurricanes”…I know…don’t tell me you don’t see a pattern developing here…?
If you haven’t spotted it already, let me shed some light on the matter…location, location, location, location…location!!! Yes, so the venue is brilliant, it’s professional, it’s classy, the dancefloor is more than adequate, but the location is wrong. I don’t care who you are or how you slice it…no one, and I’ll say this again…NO ONE wants to walk through a mall after clubbing…! It’s the sad truth that I think has been the main downfall of most of the nightspots that have come before “Clapham Gold” and I fear the VDP boys will suffer that same fate.

So, where’s the positivity you say? Well, if you refer to my location based demographic blurp earlier in this review, you’ll know that I am positive about the surge of people sprouting up in and around those Northern areas such as Fourways, where this “rough diamond” is conveniently situated. Beside that, what the pre-mentioned areas has been missing is a nightspot that offers the same kind of exclusivity that the likes of “Taboo” offers its clientele. Is “Clapham Gold’ the Northern “Taboo”…not yet, but it has the potential to be! I hate comparing the likes of nightclubs in South Africa, but the fact of the matter is that because the industry is so small (in terms of variety), one has to compare between locations…in essence it is the only yard-stick one has in making resolute opinions on this issue.
If you haven’t been, I suggest you strap on those dancing shoes and take yourself out on the town for a good’ol razzle and make sure you pay “Clapham Gold” a visit, it’s well worth the effort.
