2010/03/30 Digital and Social Media: My R260 Car - South African Goodness!

As a company, we are asked to help out with various projects as well as sponsor various events throughout the year. We have involved in many a charitable project including the likes of The Amazing Race, whom which we sponsored last years first clue sheet retrieval point and prizes for the winning team!

But, until now, we have never been involved in a “crowd funding” project. As Editor-in-Chief for ZAGlamour, I have been lucky enough to be exposed to some incredibly imaginative people here in South Africa. Connecting with these people has been a journey unto its own and has helped me develop my own skills with regards to social media and digital media here in South Africa. I was fortunately enough to be directed to a woman who has begun a “crowd sourcing/crowd funding” initiative called “My R260 Car”.

Here are the simple facts:

My R260 Car
My R260 Car

Her name is Briget Ferguson.
She has one of the most well read and trafficked blogs in South Africa.
She needs a car.
She got turned down by her 4 of her friends after asking them for R32 500.00…each
Decided she’s increase her demand for involvement
She is now asking 500 people for R260.00

In exchange for your contribution, you, your company, slogan, campaign or charity will receive 3 years free advertising on her website as well as a vinyl advertising banner placed on her eventually “owned” car.

How much more simple can you get than that? I mean, the amount of mileage you will be getting out of such a small and almost insignificant contribution is enormous…! One has to keep in mind here that as you peal away the layers of this seemingly simple yet effect incentive, you cannot help but start to gain an understanding on the fact that it’s women such as Briget who are developing ground breaking business models. Think about it…what Briget has done is begun to use the power of social media, business savvy and a “means-to-an-end” idea that has been rolled up into a pretty little package and has had a pink bow placed on it!

I find this kind of ingenuity completely and utterly inspiring let alone genius.

What is even more remarkable and surprising about this initiative is that all of the advertising/sponsorship places have not been lapped by major corporates and “uppity social standing” members of society! This opportunity for alternative and “soul-of-the-Earth” brand exposure is just waiting for others to hop on board! I believe that this truly is a “once in a lifetime opportunity” simply because whom ever chooses to repeat this kind of initiative will be 2nd and no one wants to be second…I mean, think about it, do you think that if a 2nd ship went down on the same night as the Titanic they would have made a movie about it? Exactly…the answer is no!

What you have to realise is that, s simple as this initiative sounds…it’s ground breaking, especially when it comes to creating new online business models. Following a discussion with a colleague of mine what we have been “spit-balling” about is how to take such an innovative idea and duplicate it without diluting its initial impact and value!

This is something for the entrepreneurs of South Africa to think about for the future.

Initiatives such as this should be “given a second chance” and not brushed under rug after the attention has died down!

Contact Briget through her blog or skip all the formalities and become a sponsor of “My R260 Car” now…!

We at ZAGlamour are proud to be sponsoring such a unique, innovative and heart felt initiative...what aren't you?
